THE STORY SO FAR

Colin suffered his stroke at around 0200 UAE time on Monday 3rd Jan 2011. He spent the first four days in Mafraq hospital before being transferred to the Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Considering the severity of the stroke, his recovery so far has been really encouraging. Whilst there has not yet been any indication of movement in the affected limbs, there is firm evidence of sensation in both arm & leg and he has experienced cramps in the leg which is a really positive sign.

The real progress is in his speech and his general awareness.  He is totally aware of what is going around him and is able to hold lucid conversations although naturally, as he tires, it is harder for him to articulate.

The staff are able to get him out of bed and into an armchair and Nicki has been able to take him outside in a wheelchair to get some fresh air.

His rehabilitation is becoming more structured now as the physios become aware of his abilities and hopefully tomorrow he will have his first session in the gym.  Nicki herself is giving value added to his speech therapy as she has worked before in this area.

STOP PRESS

Today has proved a real landmark day. With the use of a standing frame (henceforth known as the "Standen Frame"), Colin has taken not one but six steps.  This was done by Nicki locking straight his paralysed leg, Colin taking a short step with his good leg and then by sheer willpower and a swing of his hips, thrusting the bad leg forward.  Six reps is an amazing achievement.

You can take the man out of the Marines but you can't take the Marines out of the man.

from one marine to another - Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of thy presence and obedient to thy will.

Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family. Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Make me considerate to those committed to my leadership. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again.

Guide me with the light of truth and grant me wisdom by which I may understand the answer to my prayer
